Primary Eye Care |
Comprehensive vision and eye health examinations for all patients are provided in this service. The examination is designed to detect a wide range of problems affecting vision function that cause blurred vision and eye discomfort. Evaluations for eye health disorders are also performed. The American Optometric Association recommends that all people should have a periodic, comprehensive eye examination every one to two years depending on one's particular needs. Our examination is exceptionally thorough and is designed to be a periodic, general checkup of the eye and visual system. We incorporate computerized technology to assist the evaluation of spectacle prescriptions, peripheral vision, intraocular pressure, and eye health. However, computerization is used to supplement rather than replace personalized care. Examinations include tests for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and the ocular effects of many general health disorders such as diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as effects of medications. A dilated pupil examination allows the best assessment of eye health and is recommended for all new patients and on a scheduled basis thereafter. Call (828)692-2593 for information on fees and scheduling.

Pediatric Vision Care |
What is Vision?
Vision in the broadest sense, is the global ability of the brain to extract, process and act on information presented to the eye. This complex process can be thought of as three major but related areas: visual acuity, which is largely dependent upon refractive status and eye health; visual efficiency skills, representing eye focusing, teaming, and tracking skills; and visual information processing, representing the ability to recognize and discriminate visual stimuli and to interpret them correctly based upon previous experience. Every examination, regardless of the childs age, has this concept in mind.
We provide vision examinations starting in early infancy and continuing through the school years. Although young children may not be able to read an eye chart, specialized procedures have been developed that allow us to measure the clarity of sight of children at almost any age. We use the latest technology for evaluating the vision of young children.
"The American Optometric Association guidelines recommend that all children have a complete vision and eye health examination at the age of 6 months, 3 years, upon entering kindergarten, and routine vision care (every 2 years) thereafter throughout their school years." (http://www.aoa.org) Many vision problems can be corrected more easily with early diagnosis and treatment. Reports have estimated that up to 25% of students in grades K – 6 have vision-related problems, which may contribute to poor school performance. The visual system matures rapidly during the first few years and it is important to identify any problems that may interfere with normal vision development.
Eye Examinations for Infants, Toddlers and School-aged Children
A comprehensive eye examination will assess visual acuity, refractive status, ocular health, eye tracking, eye focusing, and eye teaming. Visual acuity measures how clearly a child sees objects. Refractive status measures for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The child is evaluated for any eye health problems, including active pathology or congenital anomalies. Eye tracking is the ability of the eyes to fixate, smoothly follow and look between objects or printed words. Eye focusing is the ability to efficiently change and sustain focus while reading. Eye teaming is the ability to coordinate both eyes accurately and without fatigue or excessive effort. Accurate eye teaming is also important for accurate two-eyed depth perception or stereopsis. Early detection and management is recommended to prevent vision loss or eye disease and to provide appropriate vision development. To learn more about how the examination process differs for infant, preschool, and school-aged children visit the links.
As part of the visual examination we also assess vision development. Young children use vision to explore the world by identifying and directing movement. If a problem in vision is preventing adequate development of perception and eye-hand coordination skills then early intervention is vital. Call (828) 692-2593 for information on fees and scheduling.

Contact Lenses |
Our contact lens services and products are second to none. Both Dr. Heim and Dr. Anderson wear contact lenses and are pleased to provide the latest technology in corneal mapping and contact lens products to our patients. We will examine your eyes and determine which type of contact lens will best suit your individual needs. Possible choices include: soft, soft toric (for astigmatism), disposable/planned replacement varieties, tinted (to change your natural eye color) and rigid gas permeable contact lenses. There is also a new hybrid contact lens available known as the Synergeyes Contact Lens. This exciting new technology gives our patients the "best of both worlds": The crisp, clear vision of a rigid lens combined with the all-day comfort of a soft lens. The Synergeyes contact lens is an excellent option particularly for patients with significant astigmatism who have been unsuccessful with other contact lens types.
We also provide the following specialty cornea and contact lens services:
Bifocal Contact Lenses Keratoconus Custom Orthokeratology Pediatric Contact Lenses Prosthetic Contact Lenses Refractive Surgery Co-management
We are excited to offer Custom Orthokeratology, which involves the use of custom-designed and computer-generated rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that reshape the cornea to reduce or eliminate blurred vision during waking hours. These special contact lenses are applied to the cornea of each eye at bedtime and worn while sleeping. During sleep, the lenses gently reshape the conreas to correct for nearsightedness (and small amounts of astigmatism). The lenses are removed the following morning, providing clear vision throughout the day without the hassle of wearing glasses or traditional contact lenses. Your corneas are highly elastic and will always return to their original shape if these therapeutic lenses are not worn. This can be an effective alternative to LASIK eye surgery. This can be a wonderful option for sports enthusiasts as well as people who work in occupations in which glasses and traditional contact lens wear is impractical or impossible.

Low Vision Rehab |
Adjustment to any vision loss is difficult. It takes self-acceptance, determination, support of family and friends, and learning new techniques to fully utilize any remaining vision. The goal of Low Vision aids are to enable people with low vision to improve their ability to use their remaining vision so they can be independent and better able to meet the demands of everyday living.
What is Low Vision?
Low vision is impaired vision that cannot be fully restored by conventional glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment, or surgery. Low vision is not total blindness. People with low vision have potentially useful vision.
Over 4 million Americans have low vision. Sixty-eight percent of these people are over the age of 65. Six percent of people age 65 to 74 have low vision, 12 percent of those age 75 to 84, and 21 percent of those over age 85. Most people with low vision can become more visually independent if they make a commitment to learn how to use low vision aids and devices, as well as learn new methods to perform everyday tasks.
What are the major causes of low vision?
Low vision can be due to heredity, an injury, disease, or aging. Some of the most common causes of low vision are macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, optic atrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, retinal detachment, and stroke. Regardless of the cause of vision loss, we offer patients options that will enable them to use their vision to its fullest potential.
Referral Service
If you have additional needs that cannot be met by Dr. Heim and Dr. Anderson, you will be referred. Such services may include orientation and mobility training (cane travel), counseling to aid in adjustment to the vision loss, rehabilitation counseling, vision support groups, and extensive training in activities of everyday living.
The Benefit to You
You can improve your remaining vision so that you can live as independently as possible, and have a productive and happy life.
